Setting Monthly Cash Flow Goals: Turn It Into a Game
It’s not surprising personal finance is oversimplified into three buckets: poor, middle-class, and rich. But that’s silly.
It’s also odd that people tend to budget monthly but set annual income goals. That’s broken.
Further, people tend to talk about how much they make instead of how much they keep (post taxes). Focusing on the latter made me reshape my relationship with work. I now track my financial goals monthly (instead of annually) and post-tax instead of gross. I created the following levels to turn it into a game:
💰 Monthly Free Cash Flow Goals (Post-Tax)
- Level 1 = $0-$1K
- Level 2 = $1K-$3K
- Level 3 = $3K-$5K
- Level 4 = $5K-$10K
- Level 5 = $10K-$30K
- Level 6 = $30K-$50K
- Level 7 = $50K-$100K
- Level 8 = $100K-$250K
- Level 9 = $250K-$1M
- Level 10 = $1M-$10M
Through this lens, it didn’t make sense to stay an employee. So I quit.
