You’re Not Alone Build Your Professional Support Team With These Four Roles
A personal board of directors (PBOD) is a group of (typically unpaid) individuals who provide guidance, advice, and support in various areas of your professional life. Being a solopreneur can get lonely. Your PBOD helps you stay connected. In fact, PBODs are great for everyone.
Think about 2-3 people you would explicitly nominate to support you in each category below. Track where you have the biggest gaps.
Your PBOD should have 2-3 people in each of these 4 roles:
- Advocates β Connectors, door openers, influencers, sponsors πͺ
- Developers β Advisors, coaches, mentors, teachers ποΈββοΈ
- Innovators β Disrupters, dream pushers, out-of-the-box thinkers π‘
- Supporters β Cheerleaders, energy lifters, family, friends, peers π£
Identify the right people. Get them to commit to monthly, bi-quarterly, or quarterly 1:1s. Start meeting strangers if you need people to fill your PBOD. Don’t expect strangers to become advocates immediately β they don’t know you. Find ways to give back to each of these people. It doesn’t work as a one-way relationship. Finally, explain this concept to people you care about and join their PBODs.
