Venture capitalists allocate capital to promising startups. Solopreneurs are time allocators who invest their most valuable resource — time. Both are making bets to maximize leverage. Here are three reasons you want to treat your work hours as investable capital.
💸 Context Switching Is Expensive: Meeting overload can find its way into inefficient companies. Don’t bring those bad habits to your business of one. Instead, force async communications where possible. My only weekly recurring meetings are business reviews, coaching sessions, and operator 1:1s. This allows me to cluster related activity types together — for far less context switching.
🕰️ Per Hour Output Isn’t Equal: I do the sucky work when setting up a new process. Then, I automate and outsource as soon as possible. That frees me to focus on the most high-value activities. For my business, it is meeting strangers, reading, and writing. Fight the urge to outsource too soon. Others many not be as ruthless.
⏳ Your Time Is Finite: Regardless if you spend 20 or 80 hours per week on your business of one — you will run out of hours each week. One of the fastest ways to ruin your output is to prioritize activities over outcomes. Flip that. I use calendar journaling as one of my time hacks to audit my time allocation to find the leaks.
