Don’t Build A Micro-SaaS Product First: Here’s Why You’ll Regret It As A Software Solopreneur

I’m spending 2023 exploring how companies with 0-10 employees can consistently generate 7 figures of free cash flow. Micro-SaaS products, built by one-person, continually make the consideration list. Jumping into the design and coding stage is the wrong starting point. I’ve found executing in this order is the most repeatable:

  1. 🕵️‍♂️ Choose Your People: Figure out who you want to serve. Pick a group that you deeply care about and have money to spend to solve their problems.
  2. 🤝 Build Durable Distribution: Partner with a company that provides distribution. This could be a one-off biz dev deal or building an audience via an organic marketing channel.
  3. 🧐 Identify Pain Point: Use your distribution channel to listen and learn what problems your people want to be solved. Prioritize solving their recurring compulsory needs.
  4. 🚚 Build & Deliver: Deliver your high-margin product or service. Decouple delivery from your time. Improve your product or service through constant customer feedback.

The beauty of this approach is that your most durable decisions take place at the beginning of the process. It’s tempting to build a product that chases a trend or scratches a personal itch. Don’t do it.

Find your people first.
