Wire Magazine: The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet
Two decades after its birth, the World Wide Web is in decline, as simpler, sleeker services — think apps — are less about the searching and more about the getting. Chris Anderson explains how this new paradigm reflects the inevitable course of capitalism. And Michael Wolff explains why the new breed of media titan is forsaking the Web for more promising (and profitable) pastures.

Cheaper, Better Satellites Made From Cellphones and Toys
Instead of investing in their own computer, research and development, engineers at the NASA Ames Research Center are looking to cellphones and off-the-shelf toys to power the future of low-cost satellite technology.

Seth Godin: Accept All Substitutes
The internet has dramatically widened the number of available substitutes. You don't have to like it, but it's true. That means you have to work far harder to create work that can't easily be replaced.

Godin: Sabotage
We know more than enough about marketing now. We know how to craft a story that will spread, we know how to find and lead tribes. The thing we have trouble with is making the commitment to do it even when it's frightening and difficult.

How Much Do Music Artists Earn Online?
Recently, the UK government passed The Digital Economy Act which included many, perhaps draconian, measures to combat online music piracy (including withdrawing broadband access for persistent pirates). Much was proclaimed about how these new laws would protect musicians and artists revenue and livelihoods. But how much money do musicians really get paid in this new digital marketplace?

As Markets Fizzle, Buying May Cost Less Than Renting
A simple way to do the rent/buy comparison is to look at something called the rent ratio: the purchase price of a house divided by the annual cost of renting a similar one. The number 20 provides a useful rule of thumb. When you do the math, you discover that a ratio above 20 means you should at least consider renting, especially if you may move again in the next five years or so. When the ratio is well below 20, the case for buying becomes a lot stronger. The most striking part of the current situation may be that despite everything that has happened in the last few years, there are still places where renting does not get enough respect.

Newspapers Have Never Made Much Money From News
Newspapers have never made much money from news. They make money from special interest sections on topics such as Automotive, Travel, Home & Garden, Food & Drink and so on. The problem is that on the Web, other niche sites which cater to those categories are a click away, leaving the newspapers with sections which are harder to sell ads against, such as sports, news, and local.

How To Do Minimalism In Steps
You can become a minimalist overnight, by not only changing your mindset but renouncing all possessions. Of course, that's not a realistic approach for most of us. We have families, jobs, lives, and unless we're willing to give up those lives, our approach won't be so drastic. Slow change is best for most people.
